1959 Messerschmitt

                                       Back

One of the most unusual vehicles ever commercially produced, three wheels with tandem seating (passenger sits behind driver), a 200cc two stroke motor plus  reverse gear. The engine is stopped and restarted again on a different circuit which enables the motor to operate backwards.  The four gears can then be used in reverse up to maximum speed of 100 kilometres an hour which would possibly be a terrifying and highly dangerous experience.

Manufactured in Germany in an era of austerity whilst still recovering from World War Two it was in great demand as basically it was an enclosed motor scooter  but offered full weather protection plus a heater for the cold winters.

As far as can be ascertained only 206 Messerschmitts were imported into Australia of which only  a handful remain road worthy today. This vehicle was located in Turramurra in pieces in a garage, it took  two years to restore to mint original factory specifications. New Parts were obtained in Germany and England and it is currently road registered.
